Dear Tom and Carl :Thank you so much for your presentation to lES during our LEADERS seminar. What It did for me was to have someone with lots of credibility, you guys, provide information on costs in a very understandable manner, to give supervisors a reason to be motivated to try to control costs. Perhaps now supervisors will be a little more positive in how they treat injured employees and more supportive of our efforts to get these employees back to work.
I thought you’d be interested in some of the feedback we got from the day. Overall, all speakers and the workshop as a whole were rated Above Average. There were 27 ‘yes’ to whether the workshop was worth their time-one stating they thought it would be dull but it was actually quite Interesting. When I began managing the Work Comp program for Concord Companies in 2007 we had a mod rate of 1.15. Obviously that was totally unacceptable. During the last three years we have made huge changes in how we handle employee injuries. We have changed everything from the reporting requirements to the post accident investigations. This has been a change at all levels of the company. During this process UNICO has been along side of us helping and encouraging us in the huge transition. Some of our changes were very minimal and probably went unnoticed to most; some were a complete change in process and were a challenge for others to accept. But all of them were backed by UNICO.UNICO meets with us several times a year. During each meeting we review claim history and any open claims we have that may be concerning. I believe these meetings help management to see the updated progress frequently instead of waiting for the annual mod rate. During the last three years of meetings, our management team has seen a steady decline in both frequency and severity of claims. I am happy to say that our projected mod rate for this year is 0.73! This decrease has resulted in a savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual premium costs.
