As I look back on 2011, I can’t help but think about the residents along the Missouri River, it was terrible to see the flood waters washing away homes and damaging property. And even with all the local media coverage, many people still think, “It won’t happen to me.”
While it’s true that many floods are caused by huge storms, more floods occur every day and can result from small, localized events, such as a typical afternoon thunderstorm. No matter where you live, it is important to remember that just a few inches of water in a home can cause thousands of dollars in damages.
Flood insurance is available to anyone – whether you live in or out of a designated floodplain. It’s also important to remember standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage.
