Here are a few things you should consider before choosing to buy your home insurance from an agent: What type of home insurance companies do they represent? It’s important to know the financial strength and customer service of your home insurance company. Do I have enough insurance to replace all of my possessions? It is a good idea to conduct a home inventory and estimate the cost to replace your items if they were stolen or destroyed by a disaster. You can insure possessions by their actual cash value or their replacement cost – make sure you discuss what type of coverage is best for you. Is the agent available during non-business hours? Many insurance agents may only be available during regular office hours but many times claims occur in the middle of the night. Flood Insurance is Often Overlooked

As I look back on 2011, I can’t help but think about the residents along the Missouri River, it was terrible to see the flood waters washing away homes and damaging property. And even with all the local media coverage, many people still think, “It won’t happen to me.” While it’s true that many floods are caused by huge storms, more floods occur every day and can result from small, localized events, such as a typical afternoon thunderstorm. No matter where you live, it is important to remember that just a few inches of water in a home can cause thousands of dollars in damages. Flood insurance is available to anyone – whether you live in or out of a designated floodplain. It’s also important to remember standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage.
